Fran O’Rourke and John Feeley in the Joyce Tower with James Joyce’s guitar

IrishSong DRAMA DANCE MUSIC presented by the New York Concerti Sinfonietta at the American Irish Historical Society, directed by Julie Jordan.

On October 7th lovers of Yeats and Joyce can enjoy a special program of words and music that bring together these giants of world literature at the American Irish Historical Society. The evening will commence with a lively evocation of shared moments between Yeats and Joyce as dramatized in Joseph Hassett’s acclaimed work ‘Two Stars’. This short but powerful drama provides insight into the unique relation between the older poet and precocious young novelist. The evening will continue with a recital of songs associated with both writers by singer and philosopher Fran O’Rourke, accompanied by Ireland’s leading classical guitarist John Feeley.

Although he was not himself particularly musical, Yeats was inspired by the rich tradition of Irish song. In his plays he dramatized themes and stories from such songs. One of his best known poems, ‘Salley Gardens’, is a reworking of a song heard from an elderly peasant woman in the West of Ireland.Music was central to the creative work of James Joyce. He was himself an excellent singer and at one point hoped to become a professional singer. There are an estimated 3,500 musical references throughout his writings. These include operatic arias, children’s rhymes, hymns from Catholic liturgy, music hall songs and jazz. There are also hundreds of references to Irish songs which have been relatively ignored. Fran O’Rourke and John Feeley will perform a selection of the most important Irish traditional songs featured in Joyce’s work.
