“The 1916 Rising and The Irish Theatre” A discussion led by Chris Morash

February 29, 2016 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

The year 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Rising, a key moment in the history of modern Ireland. Already, the government of the Republic of Ireland has committed €50 million towards commemorative events and projects for 2016, and there is extensive public debate on how to best mark the occasion. However, it is often forgotten that many of the key figures involved in the Easter Rising were also actively involved in the theatre, whether as playwrights, actors or directors. This discussion, led by Professor Chris Morash, will look at some of the ways in which the Irish theatre helped shape the events the culminated in Easter Week, 1916—to the point that it becomes possible to ask if we can understand the Rising itself as a (deadly serious) form of theatre.

Chris Morash currently holds post as the Seamus Heaney Professor of Irish Writing at Trinity College Dublin. He is the author of Mapping Irish Theatre: Theories of Space and Place, A History of Irish Theatre 1601-2000 (winner of the 2003 Theater Book Prize), A History of the Media in Ireland, and Writing the Irish Famine. He is co-editor of Mint Theater’s publication Teresa Deevy Reclaimed: Volume I, as well as the forthcoming Volume II.

This EnrichMint Event is presented in conjunction with Mint Theater Company’s production of Women Without Men by Hazel Ellis, which runs from January 30 to March 26, 2016 at New York City Center Stage II. For more information about the play or to purchase tickets, please visit www.minttheater.org. Mint Theater EnrichMint Events are supported in part by a grant from The New York Council for the Humanities and the Michael Tuch Foundation.

This discussion will last about 45 minutes and will be followed by a reception with light refreshments. Seating is very limited and open to Mint Theater and AIHS Members only at this point.
