Schaffhausen Adomnán Manuscript Launch

February 11, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The ancient manuscripts that survive from early Ireland – many over a thousand years old and richy illuminated – are our greatest historical treasures from a formative period in Ireland’s past when, for the first time, a sense of Irish identity was expressed in literature, and so the identity of a people was forged in writing. ArCH – an acronym for Armarium codicum hibernensium ‘the bookcase of Irish manuscripts’ – is a project established in the School of History, University College Cork, with the support of the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. Its mission is to make major historical Irish manuscripts accessible to those interested in Ireland’s rich cultural patrimony through the publication of exact print facsimiles of these ancient books.

These manuscripts have a remarkable story to tell. They were written at the very edge of what was then the known world, in Ireland, a place that was dismissed as so far off the beaten track that nothing good could ever emerge from there. But these books show the complete mastery of the values of civilisation that the Irish had achieved through their literature, and they challenged and eventually subverted the old prejudices. The first ArCH publication is a facsimile of a manuscript known as the ‘Shaffhausen Adomnán’. It contains the Life of Columba and was written by Irish monks on the island monastery of Iona, off the west cost of Scotland, around the year 700.

Dr Damian Bracken of University College Cork and Dr Eric Graff of the Pontifical College Josephinum will present talks on the changing perceptions of the Irish in the early historical period, and on the historical significance of the ‘Schaffhausen Adomnán’ followed by a reception at the American Irish Historical Society on Thursday 11th February.
