Lecture on Edward O’Meagher Condon: American Soldier and Irish Patriot

January 20, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Edward O’Meagher Condon, American Irish Historical Society member, valiant American Civil War veteran and Fenian, returns to his native Ireland to take part in the Irish Insurrection of 1867.  Convicted of murder in the death of a British policeman during the rescue of Colonel Thomas Kelly in Manchester, England, Condon proclaims “God Save Ireland” in the court dock prior to being sentenced to death.  His death sentence commuted, Captain Condon is exiled after serving 11 years at hard labor.  He returns to America and settles in New York City, where he continues, not without controversy, in the cause of Irish freedom until his death in 1915. Robert M. O’Brien: a New Yorker and author of a novel on the rise of the famine Irish in Tammany Hall, will speak on the life of Captain Condon.
