The American Irish Historical Society and Glucksman Ireland House NYU invite you to:

A lecture in which biographers Shane Kenna and Terry Golway discuss Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa and John Devoy, Irish Americans who were pivotal to the context of the Easter 1916 Rising.

Historian Shane Kenna launches his groundbreaking biography of Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa, Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa: Unrepentant Fenian, on the centenary of his iconic funeral, a milestone on the road to the Rising.

Shane Kenna will speak in dialog with historian Terry Golway, author of Irish Rebel: John Devoy and America’s Fight for Ireland’s Freedom, who will launch the newly revised and edited version of his riveting biography of one of the key figures in forging the American connection to Irish republicanism.

Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa was a New York-based Irish Fenian leader and prominent member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. His life as an Irish Fenian is well documented, but he is perhaps known best in death for the graveside oration given at his funeral by Pádraig Pearse.

Rossa was born in County Cork. His resistance to British rule began in Ireland. He was imprisoned and exiled to the United States where his work continued. Rossa took up residence in New York City, where he joined Clan na Gael and the Fenian Brotherhood, started the The United Irishman newspaper, and advocated the use of dynamite bombs in the struggle for Irish freedom. Rossa died on Staten Island at the age of 83, but republican leader Tom Clarke cabled to New York Fenian John Devoy the message: “Send his body home at once”. His body was returned to Ireland for burial and a hero’s welcome, garnering substantial publicity for the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Republic Brotherhood. The graveside oration, given by Pádraig Pearse, remains one of the most famous speeches of the Irish independence movement, stirring his audience to a call to arms. It concluded with:

“…the fools, the fools, the fools! — They have left us our Fenian dead, and while Ireland holds these graves, Ireland unfree shall never be at peace.”
