Artist’s Talk by John Kelly: There was an Englishman, an Irishman and an Australian

September 15, 2015 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

The American-Irish Historical Society invites you to a talk by internationally renowned artist John Kelly, who now lives and works in West Cork, Ireland. Since the early 2000s, Kelly has developed a deep interest in the local history during the years of the Famine and observed the socioeconomic dynamics that resulted in a peculiar lack of visual representations of the tragedy in Irish and British fine––or, “high”––art. Kelly researched the topic delving into primary sources in museums and libraries in Ireland as well as in London. His contemplation on the topic came to inspire his art, which led to a number of important sculptural commissions, participation in international biennials, and paintings that depict the magnificent landscapes of West Cork and the Burren. Kelly will take us through the discoveries from his historical research and what such research meant to his artistic practice.

This talk is arranged by NYC-based Spark Assoc. Art Management and O’Sullivan Antiques, collectively organizing the first US solo exhibition of John Kelly’s work. Exhibition “John Kelly: Irish Landscapes” opens on September 16, 2015 at 15 East 10th Street, NYC, with a wine reception starting at6pm.
